GETTING IN TOUCH WITH TYPES OF DUCKS
We each possess a treasure trove of knowledge about how people communicate: rules about who talks to whom, when, why, and for how long. These rules may be flouted or stretched, but they are incredibly useful guidelines. Government officials and their staffs develop protocols, sets of what-to-do-when rules for dealing with other important people. In international relations, knowing country-specific customs, such as how to give the right gift, the right way, is as important as knowing where to stand when visiting a head of state and which flag is which. CEOs of large firms are often blessed with staffs to manage such things. The rest of us must learn on our own how to walk and talk like the duck.
Although categorizing people can lead to errors of judgment, one way to become more attuned to the expectations of significant people is to create a loose categorization scheme. Using the following list, consider how someone senior to you who fits each description might expect you to talk. What kind of rules might apply to working with them?
